How it works

Here is what happens, start to finish.

This page takes about four minutes to read. You do not have to read it to start.

What Go Forward is

Go Forward is a plan for the weeks after someone dies. It tells you what to do, in what order, in plain words.

Here is what it is not. Go Forward is not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice. Nothing you type is shared with anyone unless you ask us to share it.

What happens when you start

We ask you three questions.

  1. Who died. Your relationship to them decides which steps apply to you. A spouse and a grown child have different work ahead.
  2. When they died. The first days need different steps than the first months. If you are not sure of the exact date, a rough range is fine.
  3. Your role. Are you the person in charge of their affairs, or are you helping someone who is? We ask so we do not hand you work that is not yours.

It takes about three minutes. You do not need an account. You can skip anything you do not know.

What you get

You get a plan in three parts.

  1. Right now. The few things that truly cannot wait.
  2. This week. The calls and paperwork that come next.
  3. The coming weeks. Everything else, in order, when you are ready for it.

The first step is the only thing you need to look at today. Everything below it can wait.

Here is a real first step, exactly as it appears in the plan for someone whose person died in the last few days.

Right now · Step 1

The first hours: what happens now, and what can wait

If you do only one thing

Right now, make sure someone has officially confirmed the death (hospice, 911, or the hospital staff), then take a breath. Choosing a funeral home can wait until you have talked with the people who matter, and nothing else on this plan is due today.

The first two instructions:

If they died at home and no one has confirmed the death yet: call the hospice if they were in hospice care, otherwise call 911
In a hospital or care facility, the staff confirm the death and will ask which funeral home to call. You can say you need a little time before you answer; the body can stay for a few hours

Every step looks like this. A plain title. One thing to focus on. Instructions you can follow in order.

What is free and what costs money

The plan is free. Every instruction in it is free. The email that tells family and friends is free.

If you want more help, there is one thing to buy: the Go Forward Workspace. It is $79 one-time. It adds prepared letters and documents, a saved workspace, reminders, and a way to share your plan with a helper.

No subscription. Final price is shown before checkout.

If someone you love is seriously ill

You can start before a death. Choose “Someone I love is ill” and we give you a plan for now: the conversations to have, the papers to find, and the decisions that are easier to make while there is still time. Everything you gather is kept in one place. If the person dies later, that plan hands off to the plan above. We do not ask you again for what you have already told us.

If you are helping someone else

Maybe you are not the one in charge, but you want to help. Tell us that when we ask about your role. Your plan changes. It shows the things a helper can actually do, like making calls, gathering papers, and keeping food in the house. It leaves the legal decisions to the person who has the right to make them.

Privacy

Your answers stay in your browser unless you choose to save them to an account. We never sell your information. The only time your details leave Go Forward is when you ask us to introduce you to a professional, and we tell you what we will share before we share it.
